Socialising is as important as being in the classroom when you are studying overseas. Not only does it help with making new friends it gives you the confidence to use your new found language skills
What a beautiful week we had last week down here in Hastings. As you have probably worked out we love to eat and socialise at Shane English School, Hastings, so, last week that is just what we did.
A BBQ was arranged for Thursday afternoon. We woke up to a typical English summer morning… Rain! Thinking we would have to postpone or cancel lunch lots of disappointed students arrived at school. We all crossed our fingers and hoped that the rain would stop before the festivities took place.
Wow, what an incredibly lucky bunch we are. The rain stopped at about 11 am and the ground was dry by midday and most importantly the sun was shining by 1 pm. It was delightfully warm with a lovely cooling breeze. In the garden, there is enough shade for those who don’t like to sit directly in the sun, and for those that do there is a grassed area.
Fernando, an activity leader and former student, took control of the event. He went to the local supermarket, which I understand was a real adventure for him, planned the menu, made and cooked all the food, and he did all the tidying up afterwards!
The food was, as always, plentiful and incredibly delicious. He made beef burgers, I don’t mean he just cooked them, from scratch he bought the meat and seasoning they really were amazing. He made a vegetarian version as well, that were also suitable for vegans. The burgers were served on toasted buns with salad and cheese. Chicken wings were also cooked in a sweet sticky smokey sauce these were eaten so quickly I didn’t get an opportunity to try them. I believe that they were really very tasty.
As we also have a ping pong or table tennis table the students and teachers used this for a competition. I’m not sure who won but there was a lot of cheering and booing from the spectators. One of our teachers plays for a local team, so I think the competition was fierce!!
To end the fun afternoon everyone sat on the grass with a cool glass of lemonade an ice-cream and listened to some music.
We would all like to thank Ferdinand for his hard work arranging this BBQ and afternoon activity. We are all looking forward to the next get to together.
