Being part of a community is very important when you are considering studying abroad. At Shane English School Hastings we like to think of ourselves as more than a school, we are a community we are a family and as such we like to socialise together. This sometimes includes fund raising for different charities. Last week we had an event, I have written a few words to tell you more about it.
Q…..What’s yellow and dangerous?……..
It’s that time of year when red noses are available in the shops, people are walking around wearing red wigs and funny clothes others are walking in wellington boots full of custard or baked beans, there was even someone sitting in a bath tub, on the pier, which was full of jelly.
I can hear you asking, why are people doing these strange things? Well 2 words ‘Comic Relief’ this is a charity that was started about 30 years ago with the aim to help those in need all over the world. Their tag line is ‘Do something funny for money’ and that’s why people are doing some very strange things indeed.
‘Comic Relief’ fund many different projects such as arranging outings for young carers so they are able to be children and forget about their responsibilities for a day, funding for fresh clean water in parts of the 3rd world and building schools for children who maybe in refugee camps. So as you can see it really is worthwhile.
At school we decided to have an international lunch, I think you may have guessed we are always ready to eat something down here! We all made something from our parts of the world. We had a tuna salad from Israel, lentil koftas from Turkey, sushi from Japan, babaganoush from Syria, pizza from Italy, spinach and cheese bread from Turkey, mangosteen biscuits from Thailand and halva from Saudi Arabia. As you can see it really was an international affair.
We all sat together and chatted about lots of different things and although we didn’t dress up or do anything really silly, we did laugh a lot and had a great time. All we asked was that people put a donation, whatever they wanted, into a bucket. I must say out students are a very generous bunch we raised nearly £100.
A……. Shark infested custard!! (just my idea of a daft joke for you all)
